Landmark case for phone masts
October,
2003
In what could be a landmark case, the Government has agreed to revoke
planning permission for a mobile phone mast in Chorleywood on health
grounds.
Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott quashed a successful appeal by Orange
for the mast in Grove Way after he conceded a government planning inspector
had failed to adequately consider the health concerns of local residents.
Chorleywood Against Mast Pollution (ChAMP) campaigner Yasmin Skelt brought
the action on behalf of the group this year, after the inspector overturned
Three Rivers District Council's refusal.
Before it could be fought in the High Court, Mrs Skelt's claim - backed
up by 150 pages of research - was conceded by the Government and ChAMP
was awarded costs.
Mrs Skelt, a Chorleywood resident, said: "I'm very pleased about
this because it's not just a great victory for Chorleywood, it's a great
victory for campaigners everywhere."
National campaigning group Mast Sanity has long argued residents do
not need to prove there is a health risk, only that there is a perception
of one.
